First Time Parents

There is something incredibly special about photographing first-time parents.

The anticipation, the excitement, the uncertainty, and the overwhelming love that arrives alongside a brand-new baby. It's a chapter unlike any other, and it was such a privilege to document this one for baby Myles and his wonderful family.

Recently, I travelled to Nottingham to spend the morning capturing Myles' newborn story in the comfort of his home. From the moment I arrived, it was clear how adored this little boy already was.

A Beautifully Relaxed Newborn Session at Home

One of the things I immediately noticed was how beautifully considered every detail of the family home was.

Soft neutrals flowed throughout the house, creating the most gorgeous backdrop for photographs. Mum and dad had also chosen neutral clothing for the session, which worked perfectly and allowed the focus to remain on the connection between them and their new baby.

As a newborn photographer, I always encourage families to wear colours that feel timeless and complement their home environment. The result is a gallery that feels cohesive, calm, and effortlessly beautiful.

Photographing Myles' First Home

One of my favourite parts of any at-home newborn session is documenting the little details that make each family's story unique.

Myles' nursery had been lovingly prepared and was absolutely beautiful. His name took pride of place on the wall, and every corner reflected the excitement and anticipation that comes with preparing for a first baby.

There was also a rather special giraffe.

Dad's beloved giant giraffe made an appearance during the session and naturally found its way into several photographs. These are exactly the kinds of details I love to include because they help tell the story of this moment in time.

Years from now, those photographs won't just show what Myles looked like as a newborn. They'll remind his family of the nursery they carefully created, the keepsakes they treasured, and the home where their journey as parents began.

Why In-Home Newborn Photography Works So Well

One of the biggest benefits of newborn photography at home is the flexibility it offers.

Myles was under two weeks old at the time of his session and was experiencing some feeding difficulties, which were later discovered to be related to a tongue tie.

As a result, we took plenty of feeding breaks throughout the morning.

And that is completely okay.

In fact, it's one of the reasons I love photographing families at home.

There is no pressure to stick to a schedule. No worrying about taking too long. No need to leave your newborn bubble.

Your baby can feed whenever they need to, parents can relax, and the session naturally unfolds around your family's needs.

Those feeding breaks became part of the story.

The cuddles, the comforting, the patience, and the love.

Because newborn photography isn't about pretending life is perfect.

It's about remembering it exactly as it was.

Helping Parents Relax

One thing I hear time and time again from new parents is that they're worried about being photographed.

They often feel tired, overwhelmed, and unsure of what to expect.

One of my biggest priorities during every session is helping families feel comfortable.

There is no pressure to perform. No expectation that anyone needs to know what they're doing.

My role is simply to guide you gently, make use of the best natural light in your home, and create space for genuine moments to happen.

By the end of the session, most parents tell me they felt far more relaxed than they expected.

And often, that's when the most meaningful photographs are created.

Arsenal, Football and Newborn Photography

Of course, no blog about Myles' session would be complete without mentioning football.

As proud Arsenal supporters, mum and dad were quietly hopeful that this might finally be their year. We spent part of the morning chatting about whether they could somehow will Arsenal to win the league.

As it turns out, they got their wish!

It's these little conversations and personal details that I love about photographing families at home. Every session feels different because every family brings their own personality, interests, traditions, and stories.

One of the loveliest parts of this session was discovering how Myles' parents found me.

Over the years, I've had the privilege of photographing several families connected through the same neonatal group, and it was incredibly special to be recommended by families I have previously worked with.

What if my baby needs feeding throughout the session?

That's completely normal.

Newborn sessions are entirely baby-led, and we simply pause whenever your baby needs feeding, changing, or comforting. There is never any rush.

My baby is having feeding difficulties. Should I postpone my session?

Not necessarily.

Many newborns experience challenges in the early weeks. Because sessions take place at home and are completely flexible, we can work around your baby's needs and take as many breaks as required.

What should we wear for our newborn session?

I always recommend soft, neutral tones that complement both your home and one another. Colours such as cream, oatmeal, beige, soft whites, stone, and muted earthy tones photograph beautifully and create a timeless feel.

Myles' session was a beautiful reminder that newborn photography isn't about perfect babies or perfect circumstances.
