Welcoming Baby Sienna at Home


When I arrived for Sienna's newborn session in Solihull, I was greeted by a curious three-year-old who immediately wanted to know everything about my camera.


By the end of the morning, we'd become firm friends.


Sienna, meanwhile, was quietly observing the world around her, wide awake for much of the session and happy to watch all the excitement unfold.


At around five weeks old, she was at a lovely age for a newborn session. Alert, expressive, and already showing hints of her personality.


Before the session, Sienna's mum explained that she wanted the photographs to feel natural and unposed. She wanted to remember life exactly as it was during these early weeks with Sienna and her 22-month-old brother. Not perfectly curated moments, but real ones.


  • A toddler playing with his toys.
  • A proud older brother checking on his baby sister.
  • Family cuddles on the sofa.


The little moments that often feel ordinary at the time but become priceless with hindsight.


Why Home is the Perfect Place for Newborn Photography


This session was a wonderful example of why I love photographing families in their own homes.


As adults, we often underestimate just how much children rely on familiarity. Home is where their favourite toys live. It's where they know where the snacks are. It's where they feel safe.


Throughout the morning, Sienna's older brother moved effortlessly between playing, cuddling his sister, investigating my camera, and taking snack breaks whenever he needed them.


At one point, he became slightly frustrated that I wasn't willing to hand over thousands of pounds worth of camera equipment for independent use. - a completely reasonable disappointment if you ask me. With a short break and a snack he soon calmed down and we got back to it.


And honestly, that's exactly how I want sessions to feel.


Relaxed, Flexible, Free from pressure.


Because children aren't designed to sit still and smile for an hour. They're designed to play, explore, and occasionally negotiate access to expensive camera gear.


My Organic Approach to Newborn Photography


One of the things that attracted Sienna's family to my work was my relaxed approach.


  • I don't spend hours carefully posing babies.
  • I don't expect toddlers to perform.
  • And I don't direct every movement throughout the session.


Instead, I look for beautiful natural light, create opportunities for connection, and gently guide families when needed.


Then I step back and click away.


The magic happens in the in-between moments. The way a baby settles into their parent's chest. The laughter that happens between photographs. The spontaneous cuddle from an older sibling.


Those are the moments that tell your story.


Those are the photographs I want you to treasure twenty years from now.


Including Every Member of the Family


Of course, no family story would be complete without mentioning Ziggy.


The family's beautiful Bengal cat was wonderfully relaxed throughout the session and made several appearances as if he had done this many times before.


As an in-home newborn photographer, I always encourage families to include pets if they would like to.


They are part of your family story too.


What This Session Teaches Us About Newborn Photography


One of the biggest worries parents have before a newborn session is whether their toddler will cooperate.


The truth?


They probably won't. Well, at least not all of the time.


And that's perfectly okay. The goal isn't to create a version of your child that doesn't exist. The goal is to remember who they are.


The curiosity.

The energy.

The snack breaks.

The endless questions.

The fascination with camera buttons.


Years from now, those are often the details that make parents smile the most. I understand it can be frustrating in the moment, you have paid for a photoshoot to mark the arrival of your new baby, and the toddler goes rogue. But trust me, it is totally normal and totally worth it.

Sienna's session was a beautiful reminder that newborn photography doesn't need to be perfect to be meaningful. The best photographs rarely come from perfect poses. They come from connection. From real family life. From toddlers being toddlers. From babies being cuddled, fed, soothed, and loved.

Frequently Asked Questions about Newborn Photography with Siblings.

 

1: What if my toddler won't sit still for photographs?



Honestly, I don't expect them to.

Toddlers are naturally curious, energetic, and far more interested in playing than posing. My sessions are designed around this. Rather than asking children to sit and smile for long periods, I encourage them to play, explore, and interact naturally with their new sibling.


Some of my favourite photographs come from these completely unplanned moments.

2:  What if my child gets tired, hungry, or loses interest?

This is completely normal and something I expect during almost every newborn session.

Children often need snack breaks, cuddles, a change of activity, or simply a little time away from the camera. Because sessions take place in your home, there is plenty of flexibility to work around their needs.

There is never any pressure for children to be "on" for the entire session.

3: Why choose an at-home newborn session instead of a studio?

For many families, particularly those with toddlers, home is simply easier.

There is no packing bags, no travelling with a newborn, and no worrying about whether siblings will behave in an unfamiliar environment.

Everyone can relax in their own space while I document your family exactly as you are.

And years from now, you'll not only remember your baby.

You'll remember the home where your story began.
