At-Home Newborn Photography in Solihull | Welcome to the World, Aubrey
There’s something so special about those first few weeks with a new baby. Getting to know their little personality, finding your feet as a family and slowly settling into a new rhythm together.
For Lara and Jacob, those early weeks looked a little different from what they had planned. Little Aubrey had arrived earlier than expected, putting their home renovations on hold while they adjusted to life with their new arrival.
When I visited their home for Aubrey’s newborn photography session in Solihull, I was greeted by a beautiful nursery filled with books, cuddly toys and some rather special little details. It was the perfect setting for a relaxed morning documenting their new family of three.
A relaxed at-home newborn photography session in Solihull
Aubrey was seven weeks old when I photographed her, and she was an absolute dream. She slept for most of our session, waking regularly for feeds with her lovely mum, Lara.
One of the things I love about at-home newborn photography in Solihull is that there’s no need to rush out of the house or fit around a studio appointment. We can take our time, follow your baby’s lead and capture those early family moments in a place where you're already comfortable.
Although Lara and Jacob's home renovations weren't quite finished, we had everything we needed in Aubrey’s nursery. The room was beautifully decorated, with shelves of books and a collection of Jellycats that made it feel so personal.
It was a lovely reminder that you don't need your entire home to be finished or perfectly styled for newborn photographs. Sometimes, one special room is more than enough.
The little details that make your newborn story yours
As I looked around the nursery, one particular Jellycat caught my eye. It was an enormous Sunshine, gifted by Lara to Jacob a few years earlier, and it was very clearly his pride and joy. ☀️
I love discovering details like this during a session. They might seem like small things at the time, but they are part of your family's story.
Perhaps it's the teddy your little one carries everywhere, the books you've been collecting during pregnancy, the blanket waiting in the cot or the nursery you've spent months imagining.
These are the details that make your photographs personal to you. Years from now, they'll help bring back memories of this particular chapter, not just what your baby looked like, but what life felt like when they were tiny.
And in Aubrey's case, we certainly had to include the Sunshine!
When Dad gets behind the camera, too
Another lovely part of this session came from an unexpected discovery.
When I arrived, I spotted a camera sitting on the dining table, so Jacob and I got chatting about his love of photography. It was lovely to meet someone who enjoys capturing moments himself.
While I was photographing Lara and Aubrey, I handed Jacob my second camera so he could have a little play.
He took the most gorgeous photograph of his girls, and I knew straight away that it belonged in their final gallery.
There's something especially meaningful about a photograph taken by someone who loves the people in front of the camera. Jacob's image was a lovely addition to the photographs we created together, and I'm so pleased we included it.
It's moments like these that remind me that a newborn session isn't simply about me taking photographs. It's about creating space for your family to be together, enjoy the experience and preserve this time in a way that feels right for you.
Do you need a perfect home for newborn photography?
One question I hear from parents is whether their home is suitable for a newborn session, particularly if they're still decorating, renovating or simply feel that their house isn't quite ready for photographs.
The reassuring answer is that you really don't need a perfect home.
For lifestyle newborn photography, I look for natural light and spaces where your family can comfortably spend time together. This might be your bedroom, living room or, just like Aubrey's session, the nursery.
I've photographed families in smaller homes and properties undergoing renovations, and we've still created beautiful galleries. You don't need to deep-clean every room or buy new decorations before I arrive.
I'll help you find the best spaces and gently guide you throughout the session, while leaving plenty of room for feeds, cuddles and whatever your baby needs.
The focus is always on your family, your connection and the little details that make this time yours.
When is the best time for newborn photography?
Many families book their newborn photographer during pregnancy to make sure there's space around their due date.
I photograph newborns at different stages, including babies who are a little older than the first few weeks. Aubrey was seven weeks old for her session, and it was every bit as lovely to document her family at this stage.
There isn't one perfect age that suits every baby or family. If your little one has already arrived and you're wondering whether you've missed the opportunity, please don't assume it's too late. We can talk about your baby, your preferences and what might work best.
My sessions are relaxed and baby-led, with time for feeding, settling and cuddles whenever they're needed.
