Why Choose an At-Home Newborn Session Over a Studio Session?
One of the most common questions I receive from expectant parents is: "Should we have our newborn photographs taken at home or in a studio?"
The truth is, there isn't a right or wrong answer. Both styles of newborn photography can create beautiful images.
For me, however, there is a reason I chose to specialise exclusively in in-home newborn photography. After photographing countless families during those precious early weeks, I've come to believe that home is where the most meaningful photographs are made.
Your Home is Already Part of the Story
Long before your baby arrives, your home begins preparing for them. The nursery you've spent months decorating. The Moses basket beside your bed. The tiny clothes folded neatly into drawers.
The sofa where you'll spend countless hours feeding and cuddling your baby.
These details may seem ordinary now, but one day they'll become some of your most treasured memories.
When you choose an at-home newborn session, those details become part of your family's story.
No Need to Leave Your Newborn Bubble
The first few weeks with a newborn can feel overwhelming. You're recovering physically and emotionally. You're learning your baby's cues & you're adjusting to broken sleep and a completely new routine.
The thought of packing a changing bag, getting everyone dressed, and leaving the house at a specific time can feel like a lot.
With an at-home session, there is nowhere to be and nowhere to rush. I come to you.
Your baby can feed when they need to. You can stay in your pyjamas until five minutes before I arrive if you want to.
Everything you need is already within reach.
Perfect for Families with Older Siblings
One of the biggest advantages of at-home newborn photography is how well it works for toddlers and young children.
Children are naturally more relaxed in familiar surroundings. Their toys are nearby. Their favourite snacks are nearby. They know where everything is so if they need a break, they can take one.
I don't expect toddlers to sit perfectly still or smile on command.
Instead, I encourage them to play, cuddle their baby sibling when they want to, and simply be themselves.
This often creates photographs that feel far more genuine than anything we could carefully pose.
A Session That Works Around Your Baby
One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that babies need to sleep throughout the session. They don't.
Some sleep.
Some feed frequently.
Some need lots of cuddles.
Some spend most of the session wide awake.
And all of that is perfectly normal.
Because my sessions are completely baby-led, we simply work around whatever your baby needs on the day.
There is no pressure and no strict schedule.
Including Pets in Your Family Story
For many families, pets were the first babies.
They've been there throughout pregnancy and deserve to be included in this new chapter too.
One of the wonderful things about photographing families at home is that pets can be involved naturally.
Whether they're curled up beside the cot, watching from the sofa, or determined to be the centre of attention, they often become an important part of the story.
The Photographs Feel More Like You
This is perhaps the biggest reason I love at-home newborn photography.
No two homes are the same.
No two families are the same.
Every session reflects the people in it.
Your home | Your routines | Your keepsakes | Your memories
Years from now, I want you to remember not only what your baby looked like, but how life felt.
The rooms you spent your days in.
The tiny details you've long forgotten.
The place where your Newborn Story began.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my house tidy enough for newborn photographs?
Almost certainly.
Parents worry about this far more than they need to. I only need a few small areas with good natural light and can offer guidance before your session.

What should we wear for an at-home newborn session?
Soft, neutral colours and comfortable clothing photograph beautifully. Think creams, whites, oatmeal, stone, sage, and other natural tones. Avoid patterns or bright prints. I am always happy to discuss clothing ahead of the session to ensure you look and feel your best.

What if my baby cries throughout the session?

That is completely okay.
Newborn sessions are designed to work around your baby's needs. We take breaks whenever feeding, changing, or comforting is needed.

What if I don't have a nursery yet?
Not having a nursery won't affect your at home newborn session at all. Beautiful photographs can be created anywhere in your home.

Final Thoughts
For me, newborn photography has never been about perfect poses.
It's about preserving a chapter of your life that passes all too quickly.
The love.
The connection.
The chaos.
The calm.
And all the little moments in between.
Because home is where your newborn story begins, and in my experience, there's nowhere better to tell it.
I photograph families throughout Lichfield, Tamworth, Burton upon Trent, Ashby de la Zouch, Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and the surrounding areas.
